At present, only 8% of rural Ethiopians use any latrine.
Shown below is the school latrine from Judy's original drawings and the finished latrine shown in the bottom photo.
The trench has been dug and lined with concrete and is ready for the floor to be put in
The cubicles are arriving on mule-cart with some help from the villagers
The next four floors exposed waiting for more cubicles to be put into place with the existing latrine ready for use behind.

WHY PROMOTING HYGIENE MATTERS
YES, Diarrhea kills 230,000 children under 5 in Ethiopia each year.* And DIARRHEA does more than bring disease and early death - it brings loss of nutrition, malnutrition, and stunting of children’s physical and intellectual growth.
The simple act of washing hands with soap and water can reduce diarhhoeal disease by one-third**.
Stamps were made for children’s exercise books to teach hygiene. The information goes home to be available to families.

A Family Latrine

The toilet house sits on one pit. The other pit, covered with a lid, is for compost to rest and become germ-free after one year.
The compost bucket is for 2 scoops to be put into the pit after each use.
A hand-washing station is essential.
